Quietly, I Improve My Mind, Body, and Soul
Earlier this year, I completed a 21-day meditation program. By the end of the process, I truly understood the effects of quiet stillness.
Phase I: Fighting the noise
The first five days were the toughest for me. I began the process by focusing on my breathing. The television was off and the room was silent, but all other sounds seemed to be magnified by 100. The sounds I’d often cancelled out made its presence known: I was keyed into the songs of the birds outside my window; the beating sounds of my heart; I heard the rush of the air coming down from the ceiling fan; and the ticking clock on my dresser. Instead of being in a place of Zen, I was disturbed!
Phase II: Realizing my position
I decided to write down a list of items. I used this list to direct my concentration during meditation. And…AH HA! Shifting my focus to the things I had written on paper, caused everything else around me to became silent. I was able to sit in stillness for 15 minutes and when it was over, I was focused and at peace. I continued with this technique for the remainder of the week.
Phase III: Appreciating the moment
On day 14 and for the final seven days of the process, I learned how to let my body and mind come together in harmony. My thoughts were centered, my body was relaxed, and the noises that existed around me no longer interfered with my mediations. It was in those moments of stillness that led me to less stress, an increased level of focus, and the ability to be creatively connected with my inner desires. Mediation opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of what life could bring. I was at peace and I was inspired.
During this phase of the mediation process, I had realized the importance of letting go and receiving. With meditating, I gained an appreciation for ‘living in the moment’. I’d worked my way from a daunting four minutes to an enlightening 20-minute mediation session. I was ready to take on the world!
I still practice meditation at least three times a week along with yoga as I continue to elevate my mind, body, and soul. It works!
