The day I became my own boss was back in October of 2014. Little did I know, I would wake up one morning and be laid off. I’d been at my previous job for eight years, worked on interesting projects, and met some great people. Even in all of those things, I knew that I hadn’t completely tapped into my purpose- well until that day of course. My passion had always been to work with the seasoned generations; whether I’m lending a helping hand or gleaning wisdom and insight. I even went so far as to envisioning a Senior Citizens Transportation business and writing out a business plan. However, that didn’t go any further than the paper used to type it on, but I’ll save that for another story.
The day I received the news, my director called me into the office and told me that they were going to have to let me go. I went into hysteria! So many things were running through my mind: how was I going to pay my bills, who was going to hire me at 51, and so on and so forth. The more I questioned myself, the more I worried. Suddenly, I lost all self-control, punched my boss in the face, and told him to “Kiss my backside!”
Actually, none of that happened! After a moment of shock, I packed my desk and bidded my coworkers farewell.
While walking out of the corporate office, I realized that those years I’d spent being “Z” (marching to the beat of my own drum, keeping a positive attitude, and having a can-do spirit) had all prepared me for this moment in time. In fact, I dreamt I was going to be laid off three nights prior. That divine intervention gave me a sense of peace knowing a chapter of my life was closed and the time had come to focus on living the next 50 years of my with a new purpose. As I mentally revisit that week in October, I know that it wasn’t a setback. It was the setup to Grown Folks Enlightened! It was the push I needed to truly walk into my passion and not look back.
Fast forward to now- here I am 8 months later talking to you! I know that others around my age have similar stories of starting over and/or wondering what’s next. Next is what you make of it. Have you seen the movie “Bucket List”? Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman decided to live their last years better than their first seventy. Well, I consider that GFE’S (Grown Folks Enlightened) blueprint. We must laugh more, love more, and become mentally and physically active. I want to inspire men and women ages 50 and up to live the second half of their lives better than the first; and cheer them on along the way in hopes that they share how they are doing it with other Grown Folks!
